Description
The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stated, “In my Ummah there shall be seventy three sects.” This Hadith has been narrated by many Hadith scholars through various chains and various wordings. Imam ‘Allamah Abdul Fath Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul Karim ibn Abi Bakr Ahmad Shihristani (passed away 548 Hijri) رحمه الله narrated this in his Al-Milal Wan-Nihal. Imam Shihristani is a leader of theologians. His status in knowledge and lofty rank can also be understood from the fact that Imam Bayhaqi رحمه الله, the compiler of Sunan Al-Bayhaqi, would attend his lectures and benefit from him. Imam Shihristani thus narrates this Hadith Sharif:
The Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ stated, “Soon my Ummah will divide into seventy three sects. The saved one from them will be one and the rest will be destroyed.” It was asked, “Who will be saved?” He stated, “Ahl-us-Sunnah Wa’l Jama’ah.” It was asked “Who are Ahl-us-Sunnah Wa’l Jama’ah?” He stated, “Those who are open the way (i.e. belief) which me and my Companions are upon today.”
